With tree removal and utility relocation largely completed, construction is set to commence on the highway stretch from State Highway 41 to Greystone Road near Athol. Beginning next week, the right of way along the south side of SH-54 will be closed to all traffic due to active work zones with heavy equipment. This closure aims to ensure safety for trail users, construction crews, and those on adjacent roadways.
The first phase of the highway expansion, scheduled from early spring through mid-summer, will focus primarily on the south side of the highway. Significant demolition and construction activities such as excavation, ditching, and paving will occur in this area. The presence of heavy equipment makes it unsafe for both motorized and non-motorized traffic including motorcycles, ATVs, bikes, pedestrians, and equestrian riders.
Acknowledging potential frustration caused by these closures for those who rely on the trail as a secondary route, safety remains the main concern. All trail users will be affected by this closure. Notably, parents should be aware that students from Timberlake High School and Middle School who use this route will need alternative travel plans.
During construction, unpaved right of way areas along SH-54 will be inaccessible for unregistered off-road vehicles or unlicensed drivers. Off-road vehicles cannot legally operate on public highways unless appropriately registered and licensed for street use. All ORV users are urged to plan alternative routes or transportation methods.
This project is deemed essential for enhancing safety and infrastructure for everyone using the highway daily. Updates on developments affecting the community will continue throughout the project's duration.
Upon completion in 2026, there will not be room for a new trail in the right of way as it will be dedicated to shoulder space and sloping according to modern roadway engineering standards. These changes aim to improve traffic flow while ensuring compliance with current safety standards.
The expanded roadway is designed to accommodate future growth providing a safer route for all users including pedestrians and cyclists with six-foot shoulders. The community is encouraged to explore designated areas specifically intended for off-road recreational use.
