Starting next week, the Idaho Transportation Department will begin resurfacing an 8-mile section of Interstate 90. The project aims to preserve and extend the roadway's life, enhance safety, and provide a smoother ride for travelers. It is scheduled to be completed by fall 2026.
The project includes adding illumination near the top of Fourth of July Pass, improving the highway drainage system, and replacing several miles of concrete barriers. Construction will occur on both eastbound and westbound lanes simultaneously in small sections within the work zone. There will be a break in construction over winter between the 2025 and 2026 seasons; however, if winter weather is mild, some work may continue to advance progress.
Traffic impacts during construction include lane reductions, speed reductions, lane width restrictions, and possible intermittent flagging at ramp locations. Drivers should expect traffic to be reduced to a single lane in each direction with reduced speed limits throughout the construction season. Although work will occur during daytime hours, restrictions will remain in effect at all times.
This project is part of several improvements planned along the I-90 corridor from the Washington state line to Silver Valley in 2025. Other projects include the I-90 expansion between Post Falls and Coeur d’Alene, the I-90 State Highway 41 Interchange project, and an I-90 bridge replacement near Cataldo.
To help motorists navigate North Idaho's interstate system safely, ITD offers the Idaho 511 system available online or via phone or app download. This service provides notifications along specific routes to keep users informed about changing conditions and potential delays. Drivers are encouraged to use this free resource.
