Boise, Idaho – The deadline for the disposal of cull onions in several counties in Idaho is set for March 15, 2023. This measure aims to protect the onion industry from the threat posed by the onion maggot.
The "Rules Governing the Disposal of Cull Onions and Potatoes" mandate that all waste onions not suitable for human consumption must be disposed of using approved methods before March 15 each year. Onions sorted after this date must be disposed of within a week.
Andrea Thompson, ISDA Plant Industries Section Manager, stated: "The regulations are aimed to reduce the potential for damage of onion crop in the largest onion production region in the U.S." She added that they have received excellent cooperation from the industry and look forward to continuing this effective program.
ISDA inspectors will oversee disposal sites to ensure compliance with proper disposal methods. Approved options include pit burial, feeding, composting, spreading, chopping, and shredding. The University of Idaho’s publication on best practices for pit disposal is available through their Extension services.
Onion maggots pose a significant threat as they reproduce rapidly. The larvae attack seedlings by feeding on roots and later generations can harm expanding bulbs. This pest can also lead to pathogen entry during storage, potentially causing growers to lose over half their yield without these restrictions.
