Idaho prison now offering face-to-face college classes

Png 20220831 231740 0000

Lewis-Clark State College’s dynamic president, Dr. Cynthia Pemberton, visited Idaho Correctional Institution-Orofino Tuesday to meet and congratulate the fall ’22 LCSC cohort of ICIO students beginning college on the Second Chance Experimental Pell program.

Twenty-three ICIO residents get to choose from four courses taught in-person by LCSC professors and offered for-credit within the prison, which begins a college study/degree plan for all of them.

LCSC staff have worked really hard and tirelessly coordinated with ICIO staff to launch this first-of-its-kind program in Idaho.

Statistics document successful education programs in prison are the key component in reducing recidivism, and now that the federal government has made funding available, many incarcerated Idahoans will benefit from this amazing opportunity.
