This Belted Kingfisher was spotted at Thousand Springs State Park a few years ago. This week's #WildlifeWednesday feature can be found in Idaho all year round, as long as it can find open water. As you could probably deduce by their name, they love to eat fish! They perch above the water's surface, waiting for a small fish to swim by and then they dive down beak-first, using their beak like pinchers to snatch the fish.
Usually quite solitary until breeding season, Kingfisher parents will dig a nest into the side of a water bank, usually about 3 - 6 feet long with a small chamber at the end for the eggs.
They have a very distinct rattling call that you've probably heard before. Listen here: https://youtu.be/eywwbaFy6XM?t=7
