The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) has reopened a single lane for traffic on the Porterville overpass, located north of Blackfoot. This action follows damage sustained by the overpass after it was struck by a backhoe being transported by a semi-truck on Interstate 15 earlier this week. The collision caused significant harm to one of the concrete girders supporting the bridge.

According to ITD, new traffic signals have been installed to control the flow of vehicles across the undamaged section of the overpass. The signals will alternate, permitting single-lane passage while concrete barriers are set up to prevent vehicles from crossing the damaged area.

“ITD has determined it is safe to allow traffic to pass over the undamaged portion of the bridge. The traffic lights will alternate, allowing vehicles to use the single open lane,” said an ITD spokesperson.

“In addition, concrete barriers will be put in place to ensure traffic does not pass over the damaged girder,” they added.

The department is currently assessing what repairs are necessary for full restoration of the structure. Drivers are advised to consult 511.idaho.gov for updates regarding travel conditions and any width restrictions that may be in effect.
