Severe weather has led to several road closures and traffic delays throughout Idaho, as extreme winds and thunderstorms move across the state. The conditions have resulted in incidents including downed trees, power lines, and overturned semi-trucks.
The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) reports that crews are working continuously to reopen roads safely. “Idaho Transportation Department crews across the state are working around the clock to be able to get roads open safely. ITD strongly encourages people to limit travel during this time.”
Motorists are advised that road and travel conditions may change quickly until the storm passes later tonight. “Drivers should be aware that road and travel conditions are rapidly changing. This is expected to continue until the storm passes late tonight.”
The department also reminded drivers of safety measures at intersections affected by power outages. “Intersections where signals have been impacted should be treated as four-way stops. Motorists should also never drive through or around road barriers for their own safety and that of crews working.”
Emergency response teams and dispatch centers are handling a high volume of calls related to the storms, urging residents not to call 911 except in genuine emergencies. “Emergency response crews and dispatch centers are also handling an influx of calls and incidents related to the widespread storms. Please only call 911 for true emergencies and not to report power outages or ask for updates on power services being restored.”
To stay informed about specific closures and current traffic impacts, drivers can use the Idaho 511 app or visit https://511.idaho.gov/. The ITD continues efforts to keep these resources updated so travelers can check road conditions before driving.
