The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) announced on Oct. 8 that uncertainty among small business owners has reached a record high, according to its latest Optimism Index. The report, which is not broken down by state, raises questions about whether Idaho’s small businesses are experiencing the same challenges as those seen nationally.

The rising uncertainty is significant because it can lead to hesitation among business owners when it comes to investing in capital and inventory. This hesitancy may impact hiring and expansion plans for many Main Street businesses across the country.

According to NFIB Chief Economist Bill Dunkelberg, “Small business owners are feeling more uncertain than ever. Uncertainty makes owners hesitant to invest in capital spending and inventory, especially as inflation and financing costs continue to put pressure on their bottom lines. Although some hope lies ahead in the holiday sales season, many Main Street owners are left questioning whether future business conditions will improve.”

The report highlights several key trends: the average rate paid on short maturity loans rose to 10.1%, marking its highest point since February 2001; thirty-four percent of all owners reported job openings they could not fill, which is the lowest reading since January 2021; a net 32% reported raising compensation, also at its lowest since April 2021; and inflation remains the top concern for 23% of respondents.

NFIB’s Small Business Economic Trends (SBET) report is widely regarded as a leading indicator of the health of America’s small businesses and is used by policymakers including the Federal Reserve and Congressional leaders. The typical NFIB member employs between one and nine people with gross sales around $500,000 annually.

As economic pressures persist, observers will be watching closely to see if upcoming holiday sales provide relief or if uncertainty continues into next year.
