The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office announced on May 13 that it is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred near Stateline Speedway on North Beck Road in unincorporated Kootenai County near Post Falls, Idaho. The incident took place on May 9 at approximately 7:10 p.m.

Law enforcement officials said deputies and officers from the Post Falls Police Department were already present in the area due to the large crowd attending the Lantern Festival at the speedway. Responding quickly to reports of a shooting, authorities detained a suspected shooter as they were leaving the area in a vehicle and located a deceased adult male at the scene.

According to preliminary information, “the shooting stemmed from a dispute involving individuals leaving the event and the suspect attempting to drive through the crowded area.” The Sheriff’s Office said that investigators are interviewing the detained suspect and there is no known ongoing threat to public safety.

Officials stated that this remains an active investigation and information released so far is considered preliminary. The public has been asked to avoid North Beck Road, which remains closed while investigators continue processing evidence at the scene.

Sheriff Robert B. Norris said further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
