The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) is seeking public input as it updates the Idaho Statewide Rail Plan. The department aims to use feedback from residents to guide the direction of rail infrastructure across the state.
The updated plan will assess the current state and performance of Idaho’s rail network, highlight challenges and opportunities throughout the system, and outline strategies for strengthening rail infrastructure. It will also address topics such as rail safety, grade crossings, and how access for industries served by rail can support Idaho’s economy.
Unlike other statewide transportation plans, this document does not assign funding to specific projects. Instead, it serves as a strategic guide that can help with future grant applications and coordination efforts with the Federal Railroad Administration and other partners.
“We want to hear from Idaho communities about how rail infrastructure is working today and what improvements would make the biggest difference in the future,” said Freight Program Manager Caleb Forrey. “Your feedback will help us better understand statewide priorities and shape a plan that reflects Idaho’s needs.”
Rail operations in Idaho are handled by private companies, while ITD shares responsibility for safety at highway-rail crossings. Currently, there are no dedicated state funding sources for freight or passenger rail services except for matching funds required for federally funded improvements at rail crossings.
An online survey is available until November 12. It takes about five minutes to complete. Responses will be summarized in the final version of the plan, which ITD expects to release in spring 2026. The collected feedback will inform discussions among communities, railroad operators, and government partners at both state and federal levels.
