Traffic patterns in eastern Idaho will change over the next two weeks as the Idaho Transportation Department and its contractor partners conduct inlaid striping on several major roadways. Work began today on State Highway 33 between Sage Junction and Rexburg, where four miles at a time will be reduced to one lane. Flaggers and pilot cars are directing vehicles through the construction zone, with drivers advised to expect slower speeds, large equipment, and signage warning of upcoming work.

The project schedule includes SH-33 between milepost 59 and 78, followed by US-20 west of Idaho Falls from milepost 301 to 307 starting next week. Crews will also stripe the I-15 Business Loop in Idaho Falls, first on Sunnyside Road from I-15 to Yellowstone Road, then continuing on Yellowstone Road from Sunnyside to Broadway. Operations on SH-33 and US-20 are set for daytime hours, while crews plan overnight work for sections of the I-15 Business Loop in Idaho Falls.

For this week only, SH-33 will have a pilot car and flaggers present. On US-20 and the I-15 Business Loop, traffic will move around active work zones but remain restricted to one lane.

Inlaid striping is not common practice in Idaho. The process grinds shallow notches into pavement before paint is applied inside these grooves. This approach is designed to improve both durability and visibility of roadway markings.

“Updates regarding these efforts and all roadwork in Idaho can always be found on the Idaho 511 app, or at 511.idaho.gov,” according to information provided by transportation officials.

Drivers can use resources such as the Idaho 511 website or mobile app for current information about road conditions across the state.
