Idaho residents now have a new way to find out where their vehicle is if it has been abandoned and towed, or towed at the direction of law enforcement. The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) has introduced an online portal that allows customers to receive notifications about their vehicles. Those who set up a DMV Online Portal account and opt in for e-notifications will get updates by email or text message. Customers who do not use e-notifications will continue to receive letters by mail.
The notification system was enabled by a new law that took effect on January 1. Since its launch at the start of the year, more than 45 vehicles have already been entered into the system. Towing companies are also required to post rate sheets online so customers can see towing and storage costs.
Brian Goeke, Vehicle Services Manager, said, “The Abandoned Vehicle, or AV Portal streamlines the process for reporting and notifying stakeholders who have interest in the vehicle. This includes owners and lenders. It reduces paperwork for towers, and provides transparency in fees charged to help Idahoans locate and retrieve their vehicles.”
This process applies specifically to vehicles considered abandoned or those towed at law enforcement’s direction; it does not cover all towing situations. Notifications are processed within 24 business hours by ITD. Towing companies charge for moving the vehicle and daily storage fees apply, so faster notification helps customers manage costs.
ITD encourages people to sign up for near real-time updates through its DMV portal at dmv.idaho.gov.
The Idaho Transportation Department manages transportation systems across Idaho including highways, public transit, aviation, driver licensing, vehicle registration and airport development programs (official website, official website). The department operates under a seven-member board appointed by the governor (official website) and maintains its headquarters in Boise (official website).
