As winter conditions return to Idaho, the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) and Idaho State Police (ISP) have launched a statewide Winter Driving Safety Campaign. The campaign is designed to reduce accidents and fatalities by encouraging safe driving practices, increasing awareness around snowplows, and enforcing seat belt and impaired driving laws.
“Each winter we see too many crashes that could have been avoided,” ISP Major Shawn Staley said. “Driving too fast for conditions and following too closely are among the top causes when roads are icy. And wearing your seat belt is the best defense in a crash–every time.”
Recent data shows that while seat belt use has improved, 14% of people in Idaho still do not wear them. In recent years, most fatal crashes involved individuals who were not restrained.
“Holidays can be very tough for families who have lost someone. Wearing a seatbelt is proven to be the most effective way to survive a crash,” said Josephine Middleton, Highway Safety Manager at OHS. “Talk to your family about buckling up every time they get into a vehicle to avoid an unnecessary tragedy.”
In addition to increased patrols focused on seat belt use, ISP will conduct special enforcement targeting impaired drivers. In 2024, impaired driving resulted in 86 deaths in Idaho.
The agencies recommend several safety measures for drivers: always wear a seat belt; never drive under the influence—plan ahead for a sober ride; reduce speed and increase distance between vehicles during snow, ice, or rain; stay alert and avoid distractions; and give snowplows plenty of space due to their wide blades and large blind spots.
Drivers are also encouraged by ITD to equip their vehicles with snow tires, emergency kits, and keep fuel tanks full. Before traveling, motorists should check current road conditions at 511.idaho.gov and monitor weather updates from weather.gov.
ITD and ISP stated that they are committed to ensuring safe travel across Idaho this winter season.
