The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) has announced that the eastbound off-ramp on Interstate 90 at Cataldo will close starting Monday. The closure, part of a bridge replacement project, is expected to last at least three weeks and may extend depending on weather and construction progress.
While the ramp is closed, eastbound drivers will be unable to exit at Cataldo. Instead, motorists are advised to use the Kingston Exit and return westbound on I-90 to reach Cataldo.
The closure allows crews to remove a temporary ramp and repave parts of I-90 as well as the existing ramp area. This work is necessary for shifting both lanes of eastbound traffic onto the new bridge before winter.
“We need a short window of decent weather to pave and stripe before winter conditions set in,” Project Manager Megan Koski said. “Our goal is to open the new eastbound bridge to traffic before Thanksgiving, but that will largely depend on how the weather cooperates.”
Because this off-ramp serves as part of the detour route for another nearby project—the Canyon Road Bridge replacement by the East Side Highway District—drivers should expect an updated detour plan and follow posted signs. Questions about the Canyon Road Bridge replacement should be directed to the East Side Highway District.
According to ITD, this closure aims to maintain safe travel through the work zone during winter months. The department expressed appreciation for public patience as crews complete this phase of construction.
Depending on winter conditions, some additional work may continue during snowy months in preparation for future phases. Drivers could see short-term work zones or intermittent single lane closures in the area. Next spring, larger-scale demolition and replacement efforts will begin on the westbound bridge segment.
