Eastbound traffic on Interstate 84 in Caldwell will shift to new lanes and the 10th Avenue underpass will close intermittently starting Monday, December 15, according to the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD). The changes are part of ongoing construction work at the 10th Avenue bridge.
On Sunday, December 14, crews will move eastbound I-84 traffic onto newly paved lanes between the 10th Avenue and Franklin Road interchanges. This shift allows workers to safely demolish the eastbound side of the bridge.
Overnight single-lane closures in both directions on I-84 are scheduled from Tuesday, December 9 through Sunday, December 14 between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., while striping and barrier placement takes place. On December 14, overnight closures will also affect the Franklin Road eastbound off-ramp and both eastbound ramps at 10th Avenue.
Drivers heading into Caldwell on eastbound I-84 must exit at Centennial Way (Exit 27) during these times. Those who miss this exit will need to travel to the Karcher Interchange in Nampa before turning around. A detour map is available for affected drivers.
I-84 itself will remain open throughout this period, but ITD advises motorists to expect delays and allow extra time for travel.
Starting December 15, intermittent closures of 10th Avenue under I-84 are planned between the eastbound and westbound ramps. The avenue is expected to reopen before Christmas. During closures, traffic will be rerouted via Centennial Way; access to local businesses remains available though routes may change. Shuttle buses for pedestrians and cyclists will operate with stops on either side of the closure area.
Demolition of the westbound side of the bridge was completed in 2024; current efforts focus on removing the eastbound portion as part of ITD’s broader project from Centennial Way to Franklin Road. This project aims to widen I-84, replace infrastructure at the interchange, improve pedestrian and bicycle connections, and introduce other enhancements in Caldwell. Completion is expected by 2027.
