Temporary detours are scheduled on Interstate 84 near Burley this week as crews work to remove the old State Highway 27 bridge. The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) announced that starting tomorrow, eastbound traffic on I-84 will be redirected onto a temporary roadway in the median between milepost 206 and Exit 208.
The removal of the SH-27 bridge will take place during two separate nighttime closures. For westbound travelers, I-84 lanes will close from 6 p.m. on July 31 until 7 a.m. on August 1. During this time, drivers will be detoured via SH-27 at Exit 208 and State Highway 25 to rejoin I-84 at the Exit 201 on-ramp.
For eastbound travelers, I-84 lanes will close from 6 p.m. on August 1 until 7 a.m. on August 2. Drivers heading eastbound will be directed onto SH-27 at Exit 208 and US Highway 30 to return to I-84 at the Exit 211 on-ramp.
Detour signs will be posted throughout the area to guide motorists through these changes. ITD notes that “Detour dates, routes, and times may be impacted by weather or other unforeseen factors. Please watch for crews, use caution, and drive safely.”
Construction began in 2024 to upgrade both the Heyburn and Burley Interchanges in response to increased traffic needs, with completion expected in 2026. The project is part of Governor Little’s Leading Idaho transportation funding initiative, which supports large-scale projects aimed at improving safety and mobility across Idaho communities.
Further details about the project can be found at itdprojects.idaho.gov/projects/i-84-burley-and-heyburninterchanges, with closure updates available at https://511.idaho.gov/.
“Construction has been underway since 2024 to update the Heyburn and Burley Interchanges to meet growing traffic demands and is anticipated to be complete in 2026. The project is funded as part of Governor Little’s Leading Idaho transportation funding initiative. The Leading Idaho initiative allows ITD to take a deliberate approach to advance large projects that will enhance safety, improve mobility, further strengthen Idaho’s economy, and positively impact the Magic Valley and communities across the state for years to come,” according to ITD.
