The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) will close eastbound Interstate 84 between Garrity (Exit 38) and Ten Mile (Exit 42) from January 16 at 10 p.m. until January 19 at 5 a.m. During this period, eastbound drivers will exit and re-enter the interstate using new ramps. Westbound I-84 will be reduced to two lanes each night, but all westbound lanes will remain open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.

This closure is scheduled so crews can install sixteen girders for the first of two new flyover ramps as part of ongoing construction in the area. Each girder weighs about 42,000 pounds and is approximately 117 feet long.

Nighttime lane restrictions in both directions are expected to continue through March, with at least two lanes remaining open overnight.

Matthew Kreizenbeck, ITD community outreach coordinator, said: “The I-84 and SH-16 Interchange is part of the long-term vision for SH-16. When complete, I-84 traffic will be able to seamlessly transition to SH-16, creating a limited-access freeway between I-84 and SH-44.”

Drivers are encouraged to allow extra time when traveling through the area at night and check for updates on restrictions or delays via the state’s travel information website or mobile app.

The Idaho Transportation Department manages transportation systems across Idaho—including highways, public transit, aeronautics, and motor vehicles—to support safe travel and economic growth. The department operates under a seven-member board appointed by the governor and provides services such as driver licensing, vehicle registration, airport development, and statewide transportation planning programs from its headquarters in Boise (official website, official website).
