The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) and Idaho State Police (ISP) will offer free winter driving safety classes across Eastern Idaho starting next week. The initiative aims to help drivers prepare for the challenges of snow and ice during the winter months.
Registration is now open for sessions in several locations:
– Idaho Falls: Wednesday, November 5 at 7 p.m. at Rocky Mountain Middle School.
– Rexburg: Wednesday, November 12 at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. at BYU-Idaho Little Theater, Manwaring Center; no registration required.
– Pocatello: Tuesday, November 18 at 5:30 p.m. at Chubbuck City Hall.
– Rigby: Wednesday, December 3 at 7 p.m. at ITD District 6 Office.
The classes cover vehicle readiness, proper equipment use, defensive driving techniques, and safe practices when sharing roads with snowplows. Instruction will be provided by state troopers and ITD operators who have experience managing road conditions and emergencies during severe weather.
According to the announcement, “The classes are designed to help drivers prepare for Idaho’s winter conditions by covering topics like vehicle readiness, proper equipment, defensive driving techniques, and how to safely share the road with snowplows.” Organizers note that while all ages and skill levels are welcome, the sessions are especially helpful for young or new drivers as well as those experiencing their first Idaho winter.
Attendees who complete a class will receive a coupon for ten percent off a new set of tires from Les Schwab Tires locations in Eastern Idaho. ITD and ISP expressed appreciation for Les Schwab’s partnership.
Further information about these classes is available on ITD’s travel page at itd.idaho.gov/travel.
