The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office announced on May 12 that it is participating in a statewide effort to educate drivers about the importance of wearing seatbelts. The campaign, conducted with the Idaho Office of Highway Safety and law enforcement agencies across the state, will run through Memorial Day weekend.
This initiative aims to increase awareness about seatbelt use and reduce injuries or fatalities resulting from traffic accidents. Extra deputies will be deployed in high-traffic areas to monitor for aggressive driving and other traffic violations.
According to the sheriff’s office, while most Idaho residents wear seatbelts, deputies continue to encounter cases where failure to buckle up leads to serious injury or fatal crashes. The office also noted frequent instances of unbuckled children who should be properly secured in car seats or booster seats.
The statement highlighted that speed and driver inattention are common factors in crashes but emphasized that using a seatbelt can prevent severe injuries or deaths. “Build the good habit of wearing your seatbelt so you can take full advantage of the safety systems in your vehicle. Always properly secure children in car seats or booster seats to ensure their safety should a crash happen,” the release said.
The mobilization is set as part of ongoing efforts by local law enforcement and state agencies to promote road safety during one of the busiest travel periods.
