The Boise State women’s tennis team defeated Nevada 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the Credit Union 1 Mountain West Tournament on April 23 in Las Vegas.
This victory advances Boise State to the tournament semifinals for the third time in four seasons. The win also marks the Broncos’ sixth consecutive match victory and their second sweep of Nevada this season.
Boise State took an early lead, securing the doubles point less than 25 minutes into play. Tereza Polakova and Zdena Safarova won their No. 1 doubles match against Silvia Maria Costache and Marlene Foerster with a score of 6-0, while Carla Grignac and Lorelyz Marruffo clinched another point at No. 3 doubles with a 6-1 win. In singles play, Paula Schaefer put Boise State ahead with a win at No. 5, followed by Polakova’s straight-set victory at No. 2 singles and Grignac’s win at No. 6 to secure the overall team triumph.
Head coach Beck Roghaar said, “We came out really firing in doubles and executed a few things we have been working on. We knew it wasn’t done after doubles and we were in dog fights on a lot of courts in singles. We really met those moments the way we wanted to and I think our best tennis is still ahead of this tournament.”
Grignac earned her eleventh consecutive singles victory at No. 6, tying for seventh-most wins in a single season for Boise State women’s tennis history; Diana Rogers holds the program record with eighteen wins during the 1989-90 season. Polakova has also achieved eleven wins at No. 2 singles this year, while she and Safarova have won four straight matches as a doubles pair.
Next, Boise State will face UNLV—who defeated them earlier this regular season—in a rematch of last year’s championship round on April 24.
